Game Of Thrones took home the coveted Outstanding Drama Series award at this year’s Emmys. HBO’s fantasy juggernaut collected six awards in total for its penultimate season, including Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Peter Dinklage. The drama acting honours were otherwise evenly spread. Matthew Rhys took Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for the final season of The Americans, although his co-star Keri Russell missed out on her last shot at Outstanding Actress, the award instead going to Claire Foy for her last season in The Crown. Thandie Newton took the supporting actress award for her work as Maeve in Westworld.
The major comedy categories were split between two first-season shows, HBO’s superb Barry and Amazon’s equally superb The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, which won for Outstanding Comedy Series. Barry’s Bill Hader took Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, while his co-star Henry Winkler won for supporting actor, his first Emmy on his fifth nomination. Maisel’s Rachel Brosnahan followed her Golden Globe win with the Outstanding Actress award and her cohort Alex Borstein took Outstanding Supporting Actress. The show’s creator Amy Sherman-Palladino became the first woman to win the directing and writing awards in the comedy section. It was, however, a fallow year for last year’s big winner Atlanta, which missed out on all the major comedy awards for which it was nominated.
One of the show’s highlights was when Glenn Weiss, accepting an award for directing the Oscars telecast, proposed to his girlfriend Jan Svendsen on stage. Luckily for him, she said yes.
