It’s happening: Disney dropped the first teaser trailer for Mary Poppins Returns during the Oscars Sunday night, and the new world of everyone’s favorite nanny looks magical. Emily Blunt will star as Mary Poppins in the sequel to the original 1964 classic. Original star Dick Van Dyke will appear in the sequel, and the cast also includes Meryl Streep as Mary’s eccentric cousin Topsy, Angela Lansbury will play Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the Pamela L. Travers book, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Mary’s friend Jack. Colin Firth also plays Fidelity Fiduciary.
Set in 1930s London, 25 years after the 1964 film, it sees Mary Poppins, the former nanny of Jane and Michael Banks, re-visiting them after a family tragedy. Principal photography began at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, United Kingdom on February 10, 2017, and ended in July of that year. The film is scheduled for release on December 25, 2018, giving it the longest gap between live-action film sequels in history at 54 years.
