My Favourite Movies: Kelley Armstrong

The best-selling author of Bitten talks about her favourite films of all time

THE FIRST MOVIE YOU FELL FOR
Star Wars. I saw it at the drive-in with my family the summer it came out, and it was the first time I’d ever seen a movie like that, both the the epic storyline and the special effects. When it came out on videotape, I watched it about 10 times.”

THE MOVIE YOU NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING
The Princess Bride. It’s the perfect combination of the movie elements I love the most: romance, comedy and adventure. If this movie is playing in my house, I will stop what I’m doing to watch it. I can’t help it. It draws me in every time.”

YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE SOUNDTRACK
Pulp Fiction. It’s an amazing soundtrack with so many different types of music, from classics to songs that were new-to-me at the time. Really good music for driving.”

WHAT MOVIE DO YOU LOVE THAT NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT?
“This isn’t a movie that no one knows about, but it didn’t get nearly as much attention as it should have: Troll Hunter, a found-footage Norwegian horror-comedy. It’s a really well-done and entertaining film. I remember hearing that there were plans for an American remake (which didn’t happen) but there’s no reason to redo it for English audiences—just watch it with subtitles.”

THE SCENE THAT MAKES YOU CRY EVERY SINGLE TIME
“Any movie with the death of a heroic dog, like Old Yeller or Where the Red Fern Grows. I know I should cry as much for the death of a heroic human, but it’s the dog ones that do it.”

THE DIRECTOR WITH WHOM YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK
“I recently saw Lady Bird, and I have huge respect for Greta Gerwig. Lady Bird is such a simple concept—a young woman in her last year of high school, preparing for her future—but it was a perfect (and perfectly riveting) movie that said a lot about female relationships: mothers and daughters, girls and their friends.”
